I am a happily married guy of 30 years and father of 2 great men. I credit my mother with instilling my love of the outdoors and adventure. Donning a pack that probably weighed as much as me and nearly as big as me at age 7, my mother pointed me up a Colorado mountain and said "this is backpacking"! We continued to spend every summer together with my 2 brothers traveling all over N. America in our International Harvester Scout II 4wheeling, camping, and backpacking. It wasn't until later in life that I look back and am ever so grateful for all she did.
While backpacking eventually was replaced with day hikes and mountain biking, my love of adventure travel has stuck. In 2006 I bought a 2005 Sportsmobile 4x4 camper van. It was my dream vehicle and has afforded me the opportunity to take me and my family on some great adventures (one of my favorite trips can be found here). Several years ago I stumbled on a blog from someone driving to Ushuaia, Argentina. I knew right away I wanted to do the same and put a countdown timer on my calendar to coincide with when my youngest son would get out of college. Plans change as they often do and he entered the Army instead of college. I pushed my departure out a year to assure he was safely out of the Army when I left.
While I'd love to have my wife join me on this journey, she is not ready to give up the comforts of home for a solid year. Totally understandable and we have plenty of shorter duration adventures in and around the states. She has approved the trip though and plans to join me at strategic locations along the way. Likewise, I have several friends that I hope to have join me for sections of the trip.
So, here's hoping my Ford diesel van can get me to the bottom of the world and back again without too many issues and lots of adventures!
A place to chronicle my trip from the SF Bay Area to Ushuaia, Argentina (and other adventures) in my E-350 4x4 camper van. UPDATE 2: A place to chronicle my past and present adventures while we all wait out COVID and can restart our journeys. UPDATE 3: A place to sell my E350 Sportsmobile. Thanks for following along!
